• PROBLEM: When my machine starts up under System 7, it sometimes shows the menu bar for the Finder, shows the wristwatch for ages, clears the screen and shows the menu bar again, and keeps doing this.
• SOLUTION: Hold down the shift key until the cycling stops and the Finder loads properly.
• REASON: This problem is a bug in the Finder, known to Apple as the “Finder Recycling Bug”. We cannot obtain enough information from Apple to find out why it sometimes appears more frequently with MacPrefect installed. Apple say it will be fixed in the next major Finder release.
[Problem 2: Long startup time]
• PROBLEM: It takes a long time for my machine to startup with MacPrefect installed.
• REASON: MacPrefect has to scan all the attached disks at startup, whether they be hard disks, floppy disks or CD-ROMs. If you have one or more really large disks attached, it will take MacPrefect longer to scan them.
[Problem 3: Application won’t run]
• PROBLEM: I can’t run an application.
• ANSWER: If you disable MacPrefect temporarily, you can drag a launch key into the folder the application is in. If you want all applications on the STARTUP disk to be runnable, open the MacPrefect Control application’s Launch Control tool, and check the “On the Startup disk” checkbox in the “Allow applications to launch” section. This checkbox is checked by default.
• REASON: MacPrefect will only let applications run if they are in the same folder as a Launch Key file. Because you may well want all the applications on the startup disk to be runnable, we have provided a checkbox that allows you to use those applications without Launch Keys. By default, you can run any application off the startup disk.
[Problem 4: Can’t print in the background]
• PROBLEM: When I try and print in the background, my machine keeps beeping periodically, and nothing is printed.
• ANSWER: The PrintMonitor application keeps being launched, and MacPrefect keeps killing it off. See the problem “I can’t run an application off the startup disk”.
[Problem 5: System 6 Control Panels won’t disable]
• PROBLEM: I disabled some Control Panels under System 6, but when I opened the Control Panel accessory they were still there.
• ANSWER: Hold down the Command key and the Option key together while selecting “Control Panel” from the Apple menu. Your Macintosh will beep once, and when the Control Panel accessory opens, the disabled control panels will not be present.
• REASON: Under System 6, your Macintosh keeps a list of the available control panels. You have to rebuild this list following the instructions above.
[Problem 6: Users with System Disks]
• PROBLEM: Users are booting off floppy disks to bypass MacPrefect and make changes to the hard disk.
• ANSWER: Use DiskPrefect, which makes sure that hard disks are write-protected if you boot off a floppy disk.
[Problem 7: Locked folders can be opened]
• PROBLEM: I can still open locked folders.
• REASON: MacPrefect is not that sort of security program. MacPrefect is designed for situations where the Macintosh is being used by several users and needs to be in a constant state. It saves you the time of manually setting up your Macintosh the way you want it to be, reinstalling deleted software, moving users’ files out of the application folders and system folder, etc.
[Problem 8: Password problems]
• PROBLEM: My MacPrefect Control password seems to work some times, but not others.
• ANSWER: The password is case-sensitive. This means that “MACINTOSH” is not the same as “macintosh” or “MaCiNtOsH”. If your Caps Lock key was down while you set the password, it will be all in upper case. Always check whether your Caps Lock key is down when dealing with passwords - you may not be typing what you think you are.
[Problem 9: Password forgotten]
• PROBLEM: I have forgotten my MacPrefect Control password.
• ANSWER: If you are using a working copy, and have the Master Disk in a safe place, erase your working disk and make a fresh copy of the Master Disk.
If you didn’t take a copy of your master disk, or you actually set the password on the master disk, send the master disk to Hi Resolution, with a note explaining what happened, and we will send you a fresh master disk. Remember to enclose your address and phone number.
[Problem 10: Custom Dictionary]
• PROBLEM: I cannot save my Microsoft Word custom dictionary.
• REASON: Microsoft Word is locking and unlocking the custom dictionary file - operations that MacPrefect prevents. If you disable MacPrefect, you can save the custom dictionary. This feature means that users are prevented from saving rude, obscene or nonsense words into your Custom Dictionary. If this is a real problem, ring Hi Resolution.
[Problem 11: Applications and CD-ROMs]
• PROBLEM: I can’t run applications off a CD-ROM.
• ANSWER: First find out how large the CD-ROM is in megabytes. Next, open MacPrefect Control’s Launch Control tool and click on the numbered button towards the bottom of the dialogue. A new dialogue will be presented, where you should type the CD-ROM size into the text box and click “OK” to return to the previous dialogue. Click “OK” again.
• REASON: There is no way that software can ask the System whether a disk is a CD-ROM or not. Because of this, MacPrefect regards any disk that is locked, and is larger than a certain size, as a CD-ROM. Obviously the size needs to be larger than a floppy disk, but smaller than the smallest CD-ROM you want to use. We have tried to choose a number that will suit everyone, but we have provided a way that you can change it, just in case.
[Problem 12: Can’t open documents from the Finder]
• PROBLEM: Sometimes I double-click on a document, and my machine beeps at me.
• ANSWER: MacPrefect is killing the application that is being opened to deal with the document. See problem 3 above. It may be that you have given the application a launch key already, but the Finder is running a different copy of the application. If you have a copy of the application running in memory, you should not have this problem.
[Problem 13: System 7 control panels don’t respond to changes in the tool]
• PROBLEM: I changed which control panels could be used, but the previous settings are still in effect.
• ANSWER: Under System 7 you need to restart your machine before the extension will recognise the new list of control panels. If you need immediate access to a control panel so that you can change something, simply uncheck the Protection Enabled checkbox and you will be able to use the Control Panel.
